All the characteristics of the distinctive new word are captured in Mud House's South Australian wines. This bold and rich Shiraz features the heady aromas of ripe blueberry, dark cherry and blackcurrant, with cherry, blackcurrant and dark chocolate notes on the palate.

Deep purple and violet in glass, the nose presents well with darker florals, a touch of cassis, pepper spice and with a lovely dark spiced plum floating in the background. To taste the palate is supple and elegantly managed with gentle tannin and a long savoury spice finish with a hint of spice.

Bin 28 offers a showcase of warm climate Australian Shiraz - ripe, robust and generously flavoured. First made in 1959, Bin 28 was originally named after the famous Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard purchased by Penfolds in 1945 and from which the wine was originally sourced. Today, Bin 28 is a multi-region, multi-vineyard blend, with the Barossa Valley always well represented. As advertised! Full-bodied, rich and generous. Lovely mocha, chocolate, espresso flavours. The confectioner provides black jellybean, licorice, chocolate truffles and rum and raisin. Very generous fruits fill an ample, plush mid-palate. A trip to the German cake shop: black forest cake, strudel, crème anglaise. Toasted fennel seeds and fresh tarragon. The acidity is juicy and energetic. Bold, attentive, structural graphite-like tannins hold the package together. The oak is completely absorbed, allowing the fruit to shine. The finish is long and fine, with a taught shale, mineral-like impression that lingers forever.

Koonunga Hill Shiraz joined the range in 2002, a contemporary reflection of Penfolds multi-regional sourcing philosophy. St Henri is a distinguished and time-honoured expression within the Penfolds collection. First released in the 1950s, it is an enduring counterpoint to Grange, a Shiraz matured in seasoned vats to allow fruit purity and structure to take centre stage. The 2022 is instantly recognisable as St Henri, a classic vintage that delivers in youth but promises to reward patience over the next two to three decades. Richly layered and fruit-forward, plush, and quietly powerful. The wine has a real presence, weighty yet buoyant. It has stature and confidence. There is a complex assortment of flavours vying for attention. Hazelnuts, macadamia, white chocolate, and Dutch liquorice are first noted. There is a lovely fruit saturation, reminiscent of Kir Royale cocktail, summer berry pudding, and melted chocolate. The tannins are ripe, fully integrated, and effortlessly anchor the fruit. A classic St Henri that delivers in the full flush of youth but promises so much more for those inclined to cellar this wine for a few decades.

Winemaker Richard Mattner - a born-and-bred Barossa local - loves making Pepperjack wines as much as he loves drinking them, especially alongside a great steak. As he says: "Why would I need anything else?" Deep dark red with a vibrant purple rim, the nose bursts with rich aromas of blackberry, blueberry, dark chocolate, mocha, and spice. The palate is plush and layered, delivering concentrated dark fruits, fine tannins, and a soft, lingering finish. Pepperjack Shiraz is a true Barossa classic.
